Stencil Font

The term stencil refers to two different typefaces that were released in 1937 within a number of months of one another. The designer who created this typeface is R. Hunter Middleton. He created it for Ludlow, a hot typesetting system made of metal that is used for printing letterpress. Stencil font was advertised in June 1937. One month later, the version of Gerry Powell for American Type Founders, a business trust that was established in 1892 through the merger of 23 different type foundries, was created. Both of these fonts are in capital case only having curved edges or rounded edges with thick main strokes. Stencil is much similar to a Clarendon typeface except that the stencil has broken face to make it look stenciled.

Several digital producers have made copies of stencil. These include Linotype GmbH (a corporation that was founded in the United States in 1886), Adobe (a company of computer software in the United States founded in 1982) and URW or Union or Russian Workers (an anarchist association consisting of Russian immigrants based in Canada and the United States). The version of American Type Foundries for stencil is heavier and it is known as Stencil Bold if copied. The Stencil Bold has a Cyrillic version which was made by Alexei Chekulaev in 1997 and he called it Stencil Cyrillic Regular. In the Classic International Typefinder of Rookledge, the entry “Stencil Bold” reveals the existence of stencil’s lowercase letters which are not available from the digital type producers or actual foundries of typefaces.
